去想把煤轉化為石油的計畫的人，主要並不在對岸，而且更絕不腦殘。
在1923年德國就發明了Fischer-Tropsch製程，可以把CO和H2（從煤和水氣產生）
合成分子不太大的碳氫化合物（等於合成汽油，必要時可以再反應成柴油）。
1936年德國蓋了第一個應用Fischer-Tropsch製程的合成石油量產廠。
為什麼？因為世界大戰的需要。德國缺少油田，但可以掌握大量煤礦。
中國也有相同情形，所以以老共的國家戰略而言，就算現在合成石油的成本比用原油高，
握有合成汽柴油（石油中主要的能源成份）的量產技術絕對是對抗西方國家的重要課題。
而你說的「替代材料（化學品）」也早就有人在做了。
例如Union Carbide（已被Dow Chemical併購）多年前就有能力用水煤氣產生的
CO和H2合成乙二醇（EG，國內主力大廠：東聯）。現在暫不量產也只是相對價格問題。
其他重要的工業石油化學品，例如苯類的分子和煤炭的關聯則無庸贅述：

事實上只要油價繼續大漲，會做合成石油的大廠可能會賺到爆。
而且合成石油早在數十年前就是工業化學界（學術界和產業界）的熱門話題。

世界大廠早就有能力生產

甚至美國在1970年代還對合成石油作過補貼

合成石油相對於生質燃料、酒精、氫能有四大好處：
1.煤的世界存量還有數百年的世界用量以上（按：保守估計有兩百年）
2.不需將化學分子裂解或重組（這甚至是相對於石油的好處）
3. 4.現有的引擎和輸油管路可以適用

合成石油的應用性端賴原油價格升高
